Improved plastic part quality is realized when you equalize heat transfer across an injection mold with turbulent flow management. In this animation, three injection mold cooling circuits are shown. From top to bottom they are: Straight through flow path with no restrictions, Torturous path with twists and turns, Critical flow path containing bubblers or baffles. As the flow rate is adjusted to achieve our target Reynolds Number of 6000 for the top flow path, more cooling is made available for the subsequent cooling channels. Balancing the flow condition or Reynolds Number for all flow paths brings the tool closer to optimum cooling performance. The function of an injection mold is to transfer heat away from the molten plastic allowing it to cool and harden in a controlled manner preventing defects. If all you do is open the cooling water taps wide open, you've put yourself at the mercy of the mold designer and you've lost control over the process.
