Introduction Some battles don’t look dramatic. They look like shaking hands trying to hold onto hope. They look like sweating through withdrawal at 3:00 a.m. They look like anger you don’t know how to explain, shame that feels heavier than your body, and exhaustion that sinks into your bones. Addiction is a war fought in the places no one sees — in detox rooms, rehab hallways, and the quiet corners of the soul. My story didn’t begin with a church altar. It began with some shaking, some sweating, some anger, a lot of shame, and a lot of exhaustion. Detox stripped me down to the truth. Rehab forced me to face myself. And somewhere in the middle of all that — not after it, not before it — God met me. He didn’t wait for me to be strong. He didn’t wait for me to be clean. He didn’t wait for me to stop trembling. He stepped into the shaking. He stepped into the sweating. He stepped into the anger. He stepped into the shame. He stepped into the exhaustion. And He began rewriting my story from the inside out. Opening Prayer Lord, we come to You from the real places — the trembling places, the sweating places, the angry places, the ashamed places, the exhausted places. You are the God who meets us in the middle of our breaking. Step into this moment. Speak into the shaking. Heal the shame. Lift the exhaustion. Break the chains. In Jesus’ name, amen. Bible Verses Psalm 40:2 — “He lifted me out of the pit… He set my feet on a rock.” Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” Ezekiel 36:26 — “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.” John 8:36 — “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 — “The old has gone, the new is here.” Devotional Reflection Addiction doesn’t just break the body — it breaks identity. It convinces you that you are your cravings. It tells you that your failures define you. It wraps shame around your soul until you forget who you were before the chains. Detox exposed my body. Rehab exposed my heart. But God exposed the truth. And the truth is this: You are not your addiction. You are not your anger. You are not your shame. You are not your exhaustion. You are not your past. I remember the shaking. I remember the sweating. I remember the anger boiling under my skin. I remember the shame that felt like a weight I couldn’t lift. I remember the exhaustion that made me want to disappear. But I also remember the moment God stepped into that darkness. Not in a sanctuary. Not at an altar. Not in a moment of strength. He met me in the middle of withdrawal. In the middle of fear. In the middle of collapse. In the middle of the mess. He didn’t wait for me to stand. He lifted me. He didn’t wait for me to be clean. He washed me. He didn’t wait for me to be strong. He became my strength. Freedom didn’t come when I got myself together. Freedom came when I had nothing left. And that same freedom is available to anyone reading this — whether you’re in detox, rehab, relapse, recovery, or somewhere in between. God meets people in the middle. He met me there. He can meet you there too. Closing Thought Your story doesn’t have to start in a church to end in freedom. God walks into the shaking. He sits in the sweating. He listens through the anger. He lifts the shame. He breathes into the exhaustion. He is the God who meets us in the middle — and He is the God who brings us out. Closing Prayer Jesus, thank You for meeting us where we truly are. Thank You for stepping into the shaking, the sweating, the anger, the shame, and the exhaustion. For every person fighting addiction, breathe hope again. Break chains. Heal wounds. Restore identity. Rewrite stories. In Your name, amen.
