Shirley J. Thompson has gained a reputation for her masterful synthesis of original contemporary classical orchestral music with a range of popular styles to produce a distinct voice in 21st century composition and is the only woman in Europe to have composed and conducted a symphony within the last 40 years. In this illuminating and entertaining TEDxJamaica presentation, Shirley demonstrates how she uses music composition to tell stories, using her symphony "The London Story" as an example. Her talk ends with a powerful dance performed and choreographed by Kerry-Ann Henry, Director of the Edna Manley School of Dance, to Shirley's composition of "The Woman Who Refused to Dance". In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
