Robotic surgery is designed to facilitate complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. The robotic surgical system is controlled by a surgeon from a console. At Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC), we have two da Vinci robotic surgical systems. Some procedures are completed through four tiny incisions, but with single-site da Vinci surgery procedures can be completed through only one incision. The incision can be hidden in the belly button, which preserves the appearance of the abdominal wall for a much more cosmetically pleasing outcome. Single-site procedures require a completely different set of instruments and a surgeon who has the specified training. Not all surgeries can be completed with the single-site method. At CTMC, gall bladder surgeries and hysterectomies can be performed this way. Additionally, the patient generally has to have a low body mass index, or BMI. When it comes to single-site robotic surgery, the benefits are the same as with multi-port surgery. They include a shorter hospital stay, reduced pain and discomfort, a faster recovery time and reduced blood loss. For more information about da Vinci surgery at CTMC, visit ctmc.org.
