British composer Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) was in her early 20’s when she wrote her first major work, Symphony in C minor. Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian-era Great Britain, Smith’s composition received a high level of praise from the British press following the work’s premiere by the Musical Society of London in 1863. Despite this early praise, her music disappeared for well over a century until it resurfaced in the late 1990s. This new edition is in every way designed to help bring this neglected composer’s music into the 21st century for everyone to enjoy.
