After dropping out of college, she started working at cafés to save up for a working holiday abroad. She knows her parents hope she’ll return to school, but Youn-kyung’s goal is to improve her English — and see if she can stand on her own two feet. Glorious Holiday follows her journey and begins with Youn-kyung recounting an ancient Korean myth. In the tale, a bear, desperate to become human, is challenged by a deity to live in a cave for 100 days while subsisting on only garlic and herbs. After observing these rules, the bear gets its wish, implying that anyone can change for the better with determination. Much to Youn-kyung’s delight, she gets a chance to test this theory in Canada. Out of tens of thousands of applicants, she’s one of about 4,000 selected to receive a one-year working holiday visa. Getting the visa feels like winning the lottery, but will the experience itself be as gratifying? Glorious Holiday documents Youn-kyung’s first 100 days in Vancouver as an homage to the myth, and captures her real, raw and glorious transformation.
