Protesters holding up their phone torches STORYLINE: Thousands of people marched in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday to express solidarity with Palestinians and rally against Israel over the war in Gaza. The leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Pakistan’s main religious political party, said Pakistan and other Muslim nations should defend Gaza. "It is our demand to the entire world that the Hamas peace proposal be accepted. Palestine belongs to Palestinian people and their own authority (should) be established and any other system will not be accepted," Naeem Ur Rehman said. Pakistan maintains no diplomatic ties with Israel and has consistently called for a permanent ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Supporters of the Global Sumud Flotilla also took to the streets in several major cities over the weekend — including Rome, Istanbul, Athens and Buenos Aires — following news that Israeli forces had intercepted an international flotilla carrying activists seeking to break Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian territory. The war in Gaza started after Hamas’ attack in October 2023, which left around 1,200 people dead, while 251 others were taken hostage. Israel’s retaliatory military offensive in Gaza has so far killed more than 67,000 people and wounded nearly 170,000 others, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
