Fade take off. Left go right. Right go left. However you want to name it, this is one of the most effective moves in surfing. The purpose? To position yourself deeper on the peak when you're already a little out on the shoulder. You paddle in the opposite direction the wave is going, but always intending to turn. So if the wave is left you enter as though you're going to go right, but your intention has always been to go left. As soon as you stand up you put pressure on the tail with your back foot and turn the board to cruise onto the open face. It's easier when performed frontside but can be done backside as well.
