Can cannabis help alcohol addiction? One patient's story

When Leafwell patient Alan Schmidt first tried cannabis, it was as a teenager growing up in the Midwest. At the time he just used cannabis recreationally, but reflecting back years later, he says it was much more medicinal than he realized. #medicalmarijuana #alcohol #addiction #mentalhealth #recovery "Cannabis is one of the things that kind of saved me," Alan says. "Honestly, it pulled me back to get away from drinking and get my life together." Growing up Alan always had anxiety and what he believes at the time was undiagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Alan had always used marijuana to keep him calm, but once he entered the professional adult working world, he had to stop due to random drug tests. "I ended up switching more to drinking, which really took a downturn on my health and life," he says. "My marriage ended, depression got worse, and I was really at the point where I didn't want to live." Alan spent the next 10 years struggling with alcohol addiction, which left him in and out of hospitals and with health conditions like high blood pressure and gout. After attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Alan leaned on cannabis to help him through alcohol withdrawals. Not only did it help keep him sober, but Alan found cannabis had other health benefits, too. It alleviated chronic pain from health complications like gout while reducing stress and anxiety after a difficult day. When he eventually moved to Illinois, Alan was able to obtain his medical marijuana certification through Leafwell. To this day, he credits cannabis as one of the most important tools for his alcohol recovery. "It was something that allowed me to focus myself back on what was important – my family, my kids, myself. It was really medicine."
