How SubQ Bionics is Reinventing Lymphoedema Treatment : Jordan Pollack | MedTech Malta 2025

Jordan Pollack, CEO and Founder of SubQ Bionics, shares his journey from cardiovascular device expertise into an unexpected opportunity addressing a chronic, progressive disease affecting millions. After leaving his previous company, Pollack discovered intellectual property from Israel's prestigious Weizman Institute: a microporous implant for draining lymphatic fluid. Through extensive customer discovery with patients, physicians, and physiotherapists, he learned that lymphedema—resulting from cancer treatments, particularly breast cancer (affecting 40% of survivors)—lacks effective treatments beyond 24/7 compression sleeves. SubQ Bionics is developing what Pollack calls a "bionic lymph node" or bionic lymphatic system: a fully implanted pump (placed on the rib cage) that actively drains fluid from affected limbs into the peritoneal cavity. The system restores natural lymphatic drainage that damaged lymph systems cannot perform independently. With co-founder David Knapp (former VP of R&D at Boston Scientific) as CTO, SubQ has advanced from university prototypes to early prototypes, one compassionate use case in humans, and two animal studies. The pathway forward includes first-in-human studies (late 2026/early 2027), seed funding ($3M target), and eventual Class III PMA pathway requiring significant clinical evidence.
