Phacoemulsification in Postural Disorders SuVi Eye Institute Kota India

Phacoemulsification in Sitting Position by a Standing Surgeon in a Case of Severe Kyphosis (hunchback) A 56 year old man presented to us with decease in vision both eyes. The patient has age related cataract in both eyes. He has severe congenital thoracic kyphosis and therefore unable to lie flat on operation theater table. The patient consulted several ophthalmologists however most of them were uncomfortable performing his cataract surgery as he was unable to lie flat on table. We took this patient to operation theater and performed a mock drill to achieve best positioning in theater. We adjusted microscope and phaco machine foot switch to have an idea about performing his surgery. The patient was seated on table with the help of few pillows. The microscope and phaco machine were positioned. Standard topical phacoemulsification procedure was performed in the right eye with patient in a seated position by a surgeon in standing posture. An AMO Signature phacoemulsification system (Ellips Transverse Ultrasound) was used. AMO Sensar foldable IOL was implanted in the capsular bag. The surgical procedure was uneventful. Post operatively, the patient achieve 6/6 vision unaided.
