How to prevent & treat Cauliflower Ear? - Dr. Honey Ashok

Cauliflower ear is a condition where there is swelling of the outer ear that is the pinna. This usually happens in boxers or those in high contact sports like football and basketball, where they can be hit on the ear. What happens in such conditions is there can be a blood collection under the skin and this balloons up and disfigures the outer ear so we also see this in case of insect bite. So the treatment is to puncture and remove the blood and the fluid which is collected in that spot, whether it is the outer part of the ear canal or the outer surface of the ear, that is the pinna. But this can recur. What we do is make a bigger opening. That is known as the incision and the drainage of the hematoma and also out in a small tube there so that it does not recollect there and we also give tight pressure bandage so that it doesn’t recur. It is called as Cauliflower ear because if it is very recurrent it will disfigure the ear, the pinna and that looks like a Cauliflower ear.
