In this video, Harvard Professor Arthur C. Brooks reveals to me why the hedonic treadmill is making us unhappy. He discusses why pursuing the bucket list does not make you happy. Attachments make us happy and lead to discontentment. The hedonic treadmill is a theory based on the observation that there is a tendency for people to quickly return to a relatively stationary level of happiness or “set point” despite experiencing major positive or negative events or life changes. The hedonic treadmill is also known as hedonic adaptation. But what happens when our well-being falls? According to Professor Brooks, that's when we start to feel overwhelmed and miserable. The hedonic treadmill is making us unhappy because our expectations are constantly rising, and when they don't meet reality it leads to discontent and dissatisfaction. So your satisfaction is not a function of what you have. Satisfaction is a function of what you have divided by what you want.
