FLIP, an acronym for Floating Instrument Platform, was a 108-meter-long research "ship", one of the most innovative ever created for the study of the oceans. Looking at it, you might think it was sinking, but in reality it was capable of moving from a horizontal to a vertical position, without risk to the crew. But what was it for? In operation from 1962 to 2023, this floating platform was used to conduct high-precision scientific surveys, initially during the Cold War to detect Soviet submarines. In this video, we will explain how the FLIP platform worked, how it managed to maintain its vertical position and what discoveries we have made thanks to its cutting-edge technologies. 00:00 The vertical "ship": what it was made of and how it worked 01:32 Why didn't FLIP sink completely?
