One of the few ‘set piece’ arias in the opera, it is a passionate funeral lament for his beloved daughter Maria, who has just died; but it is also punctuated with bitter anger against the corsair Simon Boccanegra, who seduced her away from him, and even against the Virgin Mary, who allowed the seduction to take place. In a passionate close, accompanied by offstage chorus, Fiesco realises his blasphemy and asks the spirit of Maria to pray for his forgiveness. The original version of Simon Boccanegra, first performed in 1857, is a masterpiece of concision, having many important and compelling differences from the later 1881 version. Fuelled with political intrigue and revenge in medieval Genoa, it‘s a story of familial love and grief, dealing with one of Verdi’s favourite themes: the unbreakable bond between father and daughter. Sir Mark Elder, acclaimed Verdian conductor and champion of this rarely performed version, leads an international cast, including Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura, Peruvian tenor Iván Ayón-Rivas, British bass William Thomas and Argentinian baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara in the title role.
