Alta trained as a Zoologist at the University of Cape Town, earning her PhD for a thesis on seal/shark interactions in False Bay. Since 2009 she has been managing the MAPA Project, an initiative that aims to make African conservation more visible online. In this role, she has taught conservationists how to use free online tools to communicate their work and has been instrumental in setting up the beginnings of an online registry and map of African conservation projects. At TEDxStellenbosch 2012, Alta shares the story of the project, and points out the significant difference it can make in managing conservation across Africa. About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
