(1 May 1995) English/Nat Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan's King Hussein are attempting to play down problems in their relations six months after they signed a peace treaty. Rabin travelled to southern Jordan Monday, hoping to show that his country wants to establish peaceful relations with their formerly estranged neighbour. Israel's Prime Minister Rabin and Jordan's King Hussein met on the shores of the Red Sea to try and strengthen what some would call an ailing relationship. SOUNDBITE: "As a Prime Minister of Israel, for the sake of the people of Israel, for the sake of the people in the region, I believe that the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel will be a solid, valid cornerstone for comprehensive peace in the region." SUPERCAPTION: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin SOUNDBITE: "First of all I don't believe that it is only peace between the leadership of Israel and the leadership of Jordan. And, through democracy, the people approved the choice with an overwhelming majority and therefore provided the foundation for the real, warm genuine peace based on mutual respect, a desire to cooperate, to work and to build and make up for all the very many years that were lost". Earlier Prime Minister Rabin and his wife Leah went on their first sightseeing tour of Petra, the ancient city of rock in southern Jordan. Petra has drawn tens of thousands of Israeli tourists since the peace treaty was signed last October. The excursion was designed to highlight improving relations between the two former enemies.
