Deus Meus (My God Help Me) | Ancient Irish-Gaelic & Latin Hymn | John Emmanuel Music “Deus meus, adiuva me…” – “My God, help me.” “Deus Meus (My God Help Me)” is a powerful and haunting hymn blending Irish Gaelic and Latin, performed by Catholic music artist John Emmanuel. This sacred piece dates back to circa 1086, originally composed by Máel Ísu Ua Brolcháin, a revered Irish monastic poet from County Donegal. He served as Abbot of Iona and was the Senior Hiberniae – Head Abbot of all Columban monasteries in Ireland and Scotland. Each verse weaves between Latin (lines 1 & 4) and Irish Gaelic (lines 2 & 3), connecting listeners to the deep spiritual and linguistic heritage of early medieval Christianity in the Celtic world. The melody featured in this rendition was composed by Seán Óg Ó Tuama roughly 50 years ago, and it has since become the most recognized setting of this ancient prayer-hymn.
