Madeline, 13, was allegedly dropped off by Sterns near her Orange County middle school on Feb. 26, but as the investigation unfolded over the ensuing week, investigators say they believe Sterns murdered the young teen and drove around with her body for hours. Sterns, 37, is the boyfriend of Madeline’s mother, Jennifer Soto, and had been living with them in Kissimmee, FL. Investigators say they found pictures and videos on Sterns’ phone that showed him sexually abusing Madeline as far back as 2019. Prior to recovering her body, police arrested Sterns on unrelated charges of possessing child sexual abuse material. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has released a video of their interview with Madeline's mother which took place on March 1, hours before the teenager's body was found. During the nearly three-hour interview clip, an investigator references Jennifer's claim that she, her boyfriend and Madeline all slept in the same bed together — and expresses suspicions that Jennifer knew about her boyfriend's alleged sex abuse. Madeline died from strangulation, according to a medical examiner's report. Sterns was charged with first-degree murder in April in connection with Madeline's death. Jennifer has not been charged in connection with the case. So far, only Sterns has been charged in this case. Shortly after Madeline's body was found, 60 new charges related to capital S-battery, lewd or lascivious molestation and unlawful possession of materials depicting S- performance by a child were filed against Sterns. Later, the state charged the man in Madeline's murder and announced they would be seeking the death penalty.
