Facebook - / johnmanship Bill Griffin - Try To Run A Game On Me - Naptown : N-904 (45s) Bill Griffin - Forbidden Fruit - Naptown : N-904 (45s) "Try To Run A Game On Me" could so easily have become a proper-NS- monster, when it was first introduced to the scene in the early 80s. This driving slab of Northern Soul, was hampered by its own extreme rarity there was hardly any DJ's able to support the initial enthusiasm, with a copy, an obvious dancefloor shaker, drenched in all the credentials to drive it forward to the top, except availability... This disc is one of only two 45s on the Naptown label out of L.A. Naptown aided by distribution connections to the Commerce label that gave us the moody NS cruiser "Darnell Darris" "Don´t Love Me & Leave Me" that John Vincent brilliantly championed a couple of years ago. I described this disc many years ago as, " "incredibly RARE and utterly potent Los Angeles 60s Northern dancer - arranged by the great James Carmichael .. Two killer sides one very rare disc." this is only our second copy this century. Two sides written by the mysterious O. C. Groom. Who decorates the bludgeoning with dismissive, forceful lyrics, perfected matched up with Bill's softly graveled vocal. Riding "Carmichael's" horn driven arrangement; stabbing away with jangling guitar, attacked by loud hard-blown brass at a perfect pace and power to fuel the dancers. A wonderful instrumental break so typical of "Carmichael's" style that afforded him so many Northern Soul classic credits. Although sparse DJ support given to this tune, it proved at the time, that true rarity can sometimes be an obstacle. But now we have the internet to flaunt our best records on. We think it's time this almighty stomper got a chance of a rerun, one listen, we are sure you'll agree... this is just far too good to sit filed away in some collection, somewhere. Today's NS turntables are crying out proper dance tunes of this calibre, to set this resurgent scene alight! Condition Report Two clean pale green labels, ballpoint initials B.B. and x x and some soft storage rub. Strong gloss vinyl, reveals only soft surface that don't affect play (listen).
