Trialogues - on the Chaconna of the Cantata BWV150 by J.S.BACH Nota Bene Sinfonieorchester Mateus Araujo 23.6.2019 Kirche Oberstrass - Zürich - Switzerland This piece is a meditation upon J.S.Bach final Chaconna of Cantata BWV150, " Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich", written circa 1707, originally scored for two violins, bassoons, continuo, 4 part-choir and 4 soloists. It is an early example of Bach's art that synthesizes the musical raw material of his time, in a cycle of four chords. In turn, this piece became later the raw material for the Finale of Brahms 4th Symphony, expanded with the resources of the romantic era. Our current perspective allows us to add our memories to Bach's music. Besides Brahms, there are echoes of Wagner, Bruckner, Debussy or Sibelius... The characteristic effects and motivs used in the Chaconna are charged now with our references, making us participants in this "centuries conversation". After a short prelude in the orchestra, the Chaconna is brought to life, orchestrated for a modern orchestra, carrying inside other conversations, usually in three-part groups of soloists in the strings, woodwinds and brass.
