Kalmel Buai Dance Group: Taking you back in time to the Ancestors of Saibai Island. A dance troupe first established in August 2001 Kalmel Buai's foundations are based around the fundamental aspects of Knowledge, Awareness, Language, Multicultural, Education, Learning, Bridging, Unity, Ancestral, and Indigenous. The artistry and craft work signifies the continuation of the ancestral generations from old to new. The songs, the dance are sagas that have survived from their forefathers and flourished traditionally through their descendants for following generations. These sagas tell stories of actual events during the time of the their ancestors, marking significant milestones and important events. From this rich history Kalmel Buai represent the gratitude and appreciation of the plight endured by their ancestors. 'Without art and craft, song and dance, the culture and history of Saibai Islanders would be a memory in an Elders dream soon forgotten.' The Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration opening weekend (Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 July) centred around a coming together of the community & the general public to enjoy performances, workshops, talks, food, culture & exhibitions highlighting the rich traditions & contemporary culture of the Torres Strait. Visiting artists & groups from the Torres Strait performed alongside local community groups & contemporary performers to produce a diverse & engaging series of events across the Cultural Centre precinct. 'Land, Sea & Sky' at GoMA embraces the cultural & practical significance of land, sea & sky to Torres Strait Islander people & its influence on their art. The exhibition celebrates the unique & diverse contemporary art from the Islands, & includes dance objects, prints, film, video, textiles, ceramics & installations drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery's significant collection of works by Torres Strait Islander artists as well as key loans & commissioned works. The exhibition reinforces cultural knowledge for Islanders & presents their rich & complex cultures to broader audiences, including performance & oral history. It is an all-encompassing exhibition, representing different island groups as well as mainland & urban groups. Works by more than 40 artists, including major commissions of exciting new works, & loans from both important public & private collections across Australia are on display. Presented across the major Level 3 galleries at GoMA, this is the largest & possibly the most significant exhibition to date of contemporary art by Torres Strait Islander artists anywhere in the world. | EXHIBITION WEBSITE | http://qag.qld.gov.au/exhibitions/cur...
