The principle of superposition in AS Physics states that when two or more waves meet at a point, the resultant displacement at that point is equal to the algebraic sum of the individual displacements of each wave. This means the waves combine by adding their effects together. If the waves meet in phase (their crests and troughs align), they produce constructive interference, resulting in a larger amplitude. If they meet out of phase (a crest meets a trough), they produce destructive interference, reducing or canceling the amplitude. After overlapping, the waves continue to travel in their original directions unchanged. This principle applies to all types of waves, including sound, water, and light waves.
