God of Gamblers (Main Theme) – Styles Report Soul Mix. Back with another 70s soul/funk themed homage to another underappreciated Hong Kong cinema classic, God of Gamblers, originally composed by HK film scoring legend Lowell Lo. I discovered God of Gamblers (and its sequel) shortly after running through the John Woo and Chow Yun Fat collaborations on VHS. Admittedly, the Wong Jing directed film (and its sequel) doesn't hold up particularly well today. On its surface it's a Rain Man ripoff and there are nasty themes of misogyny, racism, ableism and dramatically unfunny humor (signatures of that director) that permeate throughout the movie. However, Chow Yun Fat's incredible charisma and versatility has a wonderful opportunity to shine here, a rose in the concrete, and he portrays the title character with a style, panache, wit, and charm that is rarely paralleled even in Hollywood. The gambling sequences are brilliant (right up there with the likes of Maverick and James Bond's baccarat scenes) and those and a great gun battle (where Chow, of course, breaks out the double pistols) almost salvage the wildly inconsistent script and direction. Consequently, I tend to fast forward through most of the middle of the film to get to the good stuff. And of course, the theme music is top notch. When you hear that theme play and Chow walks out with his slicked back hair and tuxedo in slow motion you can't help but feel as roused up and heroic as the protagonist. As with my Better Tomorrow Soul Mix, I didn't aim to make a (likely inferior) carbon copy, but aimed to give it a little bit of fresh soulful flair. I would LOVE to see a big budget God of Gamblers remake, but the casting would have to be spot on. I'm not sure if there is a young actor with both the magnetic screen presence and dramatic depth as Yun-Fat out there. Whatever happens though, keep Wong Jing far away from it.
