This is a video of Dr Barden's contribution to the plenary panel Autocritical Disability Studies at the CCDS Disability Impact Conference, Liverpool Hope University, July 2023 Dr Owen Barden (Liverpool Hope University) Learning with Learning Disability Inspired by Tim Ingold’s theorising of anthropology and of education, this plenary presentation explores what it might mean to learn with rather than from learning disability. This involves recognising that learning disability is an integral part of being human, and therefore part of us and of the world we live in. We therefore, in Ingold’s and John Dewey’s terms, need to communicate with learning disability, because despite ever-shifting conceptualisations of what ‘it’ is, at its core it has much it can tell us about being human. Learning disability is thus a tool for thinking with; thinking about culture, about disability, and above all, what it means to be human. The paper offers a reflexive account of my relationship with learning disability; not as a “touchy-feely, sentimental or confessional mode of engagement” (Peim, 2018:19) but in order to objectify my own subjectivity and attempt to understand and locate myself in relation to what I attempt to research. #ccds #disability #DisabilityStudies #learningdisability
