Panel - "Rembering the Bengali Hindu Genocide"

We next present a panel discussion on the 1971 Bengali Hindu Genocide in Bangladesh. The panelists are Dr. Mohit Ray, Sraboni Chowdhury, and Professor Sachi Dastidar. Each presents a unique perspective about this horrific period of targeted genocide against Bengali Hindus by Pakistan’s army. Dr. Ray, a human rights activist based in Kolkata, has been organizing for the human rights of the Hindu-Buddhist-Christian minorities in Bangladesh, who face severe persecution. Here, he discusses the plight of Hindu refugees as a result of the 1971 genocide. Sraboni Chowdhury, a survivor of the worst atrocities committed as part of this ghastly horror, provides a harrowing account of what befell Hindu women, including herself, during this period. Finally, Professor Sachi Dastidar— a professor of practice at SUNY-Old Westbury— provides a historical evaluation of the events of 1971. The panel is moderated by Deepali Kulkarni ji. Deepali ji is the Director of Human Rights at the Hindu American Foundation (HAF). She holds an MA in Asian Religion from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, an Masters in Women's Studies from the University of Oxford, and an MPhil in Religion from Syracuse University.
