Clear Mountain Sky by Mike Springer is included in the Level One Piano Repertoire book in the 6th edition of the Celebration Series from the @TheRoyalConservatory . This piece is such a beautiful example to prove that beautiful music can happen at any stage of musical development and a great reminder to make sure to play music you love the sound of along the way. Mike Springer is a pianist, composer, arranger and adjudicator from Texas, USA. You can read more about Mike Springer here, as a published composer with Alfred Music. https://www.alfred.com/authors/mike-s... This week we went hiking on a mountain close by and this piece really beautifully captured that concept of a clear mountain sky. I loved the way the melody had opportunities to shift between hands with lots of opportunity to shape musical phrases with hints from the carefully notated dynamics. I loved the addition of the F naturals which also gives this piece some special colours in the key of G major. The ritardandos give students special chances to explore musical choice and internal rhythm. I definitely stretched some out here, but love encouraging students to find their own voice as they feel those special musical opportunities to voice their ideas. Sensitive pedal is also explored in this piece with a wonderful variety of pedal changes along with harmonic changes, but also some chances to explore the music without pedal (measure 9 & 20) as well. I hope you enjoy playing this piece as much as I did! I would love to know if you've introduced this elementary piano solo to students already or if you are learning it yourself!
