“Be a host in life, not a guest. Not just in your business affairs but also in your personal life.” — Matt Watkinson I heard Matt, the author of “Mastering Uncertainty”, “The Ten Principles Behind Great Customer Experiences” and “The Grid”, say that while I was researching for our conversation, episode 96 of #BraveUX. It intrigued me, so I asked him to go deeper into it. Matt told me that he borrowed the idea from Csaba Konkoly, the co-author of “Mastering Uncertainty” and Co-Founder and President of Hum Capital. He went on to say: 💬 “I’ve… learned a lot from observing very successful people, not just successful people but happy people, that they tend to be hosts in life… They’re not looking at, ‘what’s in it for me right now?’ They’re looking at how do I create value with other people? How do I share what I know? How do I make people feel welcome? How do I make people feel valued? How do I listen and tend to people’s individuals needs?” And Matt suggested that there are some good reasons for being a host: 💬 “Social capital has greater influence than financial capital, in the long-run… and it certainly precedes it and almost anyone can build their social capital by being a host in life… by doing things for other people and we also feel good about it. It’s in our DNA to want to do that.” Matt believes that being a host in life is a very simple, yet powerful concept that we can use to positively shape our behaviour. I agree. Now, without getting all virtue-signally, as the host of a podcast, I can tell you that there have been many wonderful and surprising things that have resulted from living this idea on a regular basis - including my conversation with Matt. Now, I’m not suggesting you need to go and start a podcast but here’s a healthy question to chew on… 👉 How can you be more of a host in life?
