Welcome to A Psychologist Talks! On today's episode I talk about process-oriented therapies and how to be intentional with them. What is a healthy pace? How long should it last? In a world increasingly focused on rapid outcomes and over-managed care, it is even more important than ever for process-oriented providers to have a model to conceptualize and defend the "arc" of the therapy they are performing. I offer my model of Change Over Time as a hopefully simple theory that providers might be able to apply to "map" their therapeutic process (or augment the map they already use!). While this episode is largely focused at my fellow providers, consumers might find this interesting when thinking about their own experiences in therapy. Did you feel like there was a map? Did your provider collaborate with and/or help you understand the process better? Have you felt like you were in therapy for "too long?" Or did it end prematurely?
