Tenor Jan Kiepura singing Puccini’s "Keine Schlafe" better known as "Nessun Dorma", in the 1934 movie "My Heart is calling You". This movie is typical of how film producers of that epoch wanted to bring serious music in an accessible way to the general public. In this film Marta Eggerth and Jan Kiepura first met and fell in love. Jan Kiepura, in the role of tenor Mario Delmonti, is onboard a ship as part of a South American Opera Ensemble booked at the Opera House in Monte Carlo. But midway they learn that the performance has been cancelled. Meanwhile on board, Mario discovers a stowaway, Carla, played by Marta Eggerth. Mario sings on board to help pay for her passage. When they arrive in Monte Carlo, they all decide to put on a Show outside the Opera House. Crowds gather and the audience inside come out to hear Delmonti’s magnificent voice causing a sensation. The Monte Carlo Opera House reinstates the Ensemble and, Jan and Marta fall into each other’s arms with happiness. In true life Jan Kiepura sang outside Opera Houses in many cities to adoring crowds who could not afford to go the Opera House. Later Jan Kiepura and Marta Eggerth fell in love and got married.
