3 AM, November 1944. Somewhere in the Pacific, the destroyer USS Callaghan pushed through what sailors grimly called "the Death Zone." These waters were crawling with Japanese submarines, silent predators that had sent dozens of ships to the bottom. And right now, one of them was beginning its attack run on Callaghan, certain it had found another easy kill. Then the destroyer did something no submarine captain could have expected. It dropped a torpedo into the dark water—aimed at nothing. Then a second one, same thing. Both were acoustic homing torpedos, a new weapon most of the Imperial Navy didn't even know existed. They didn't need a target painted on a scope. They only needed sound.
