TGV Sud Est was a high-speed train service that connected Paris and Lyon in France. The TGV Sud Est line was the first high-speed rail line to be built in France and is widely regarded as one of the most successful and important high-speed rail projects in the world. The TGV Sud Est project was first proposed in the early 1970s by the French government. At the time, France's railway system was in need of modernization, and high-speed rail was seen as the solution to improve transportation between major cities. The project was initially met with skepticism, but in 1976, a prototype TGV train set a new world speed record of 318 km/h (198 mph). Construction of the TGV Sud Est line began in 1978 and took five years to complete. The line spans 409 km (254 miles) and includes several viaducts, tunnels, and bridges to accommodate the high speeds of the trains. The line was inaugurated on September 22, 1981, by French President Francois Mitterrand. The TGV Sud Est service revolutionized travel between Paris and Lyon, reducing travel time from over four hours to just two hours. The train quickly became popular with passengers, and by 1984, it had carried over 20 million passengers. In 1994, the line was extended to connect with the TGV Rhône-Alpes line, which runs from Lyon to Valence. The TGV Sud Est also helped spur the development of high-speed rail technology in France and around the world. Today, France has over 2,800 km (1,700 miles) of high-speed rail lines, and the TGV has become an icon of French engineering and design. In 2011, the TGV Sud Est was retired from service after 30 years of operation. The trains were replaced by newer, faster TGV trains, but the legacy of the TGV Sud Est lives on. It paved the way for high-speed rail in France and around the world, and remains a symbol of innovation, progress, and modernization.
