Abstract : The plight of the honey bee has often made headlines, but what about the approximately 4000 species of bees that reside in the United States? With a diverse population of social and solitary bees in New York State, we have an opportunity to make a difference in the survival of pollinators and plants. Judi will be comparing the similarities and differences of the popular honey bee and lesser known mason bee, including a brief look at a year of their life, the different pollination techniques, requirements to raise each and, more importantly, how we may help both survive. Speaker Bio: Judi Bogardus developed her love of honey bees watching her great uncle work with his bees as a small child. Years later after inheriting one of his honey jars, she started her own apiary. During the past seven years of beekeeping, she has participated in numerous citizen science projects for the honey bee, worked as an ambassador for PerfectBee online academy and attend MSU for her Master Beekeepers certification. Four years ago, after reading an article on mason bees, she started raising them as well. In her free time, she is raising various poultry, birdwatching, and exploring the outdoors with her dogs.
