(30 Jun 1998) English/Nat Nobel Peace Prize Winner Jose Ramos-Horta is urging Indonesia to withdraw its troops from East Timor. Ramos-Horta, who was speaking to United Nations-based journalists in New York, also called for the release of political prisoners, including resistance leader Xanana Gusmao. Jose Ramos-Horta told journalists that his predictions of change in Indonesia have taken place. He says he wasn't surprised at the departure of former President Suharto, after weeks of rioting by students calling for his resignation. He says there is still room for great change in Indonesia due to economic hardships in the region. On the subject of East Timor, Ramos-Horta is urging Indonesia's new President B.J. Habibie to free all political prisoners. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We say this is not the way to start negotiations. The most sensible thing for Indonesia to do is to proceed with the release of all prisoners without conditions, release the resistance leader Xanana Gusmao who is respected by the people of EastTimor, respected by the international community. President Mandela who met with him a year ago was overwhelmed by Xanana Gusmao. " SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramos-Horta, International Spokesman for East Timor Ramos-Horta is also urging Indonesia to withdraw its troops from East Timor and offer full autonomy to the East Timorese people. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It should drastically reduce its troop presence in East Timor because here you have a country that economically is thoroughly bankrupt, then why continue to subsidise, waste money and resources on a territory which they say is impoverished. Well if it's so impoverished then why waste money on a massive troop presence there at a time when Indonesian people are claiming food and so on." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramos-Horta, International Spokesman on East Timor Ramos-Horta says President Habibie has made a few concessions such as releasing some political prisoners but he says it's not enough for the East Timorese to give up their fight for independence. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Imposing as conditions the recognition of Indonesia's illegal annexation of East Timor will go nowhere. At one point in time the people of East Timor have to be consulted about their future, that's the only guarantee and we have shown flexibility by saying yes let's freeze a decision on the state of the territory until a later stage and Indonesia could well benefit from it in the long run." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramos Horta, International Spokesman on East Timor. Mr Ramos-Horta spoke as violence continues in the former Portuguese colony. On Monday one man was killed and four others were wounded in a skirmish between police and protestors. It's the second time in three days that deadly violence has erupted in East Timor between the military and pro-independence protestors.
