In June 1944, the German Reich faced three major offensives simultaneously: the Allied landings in Normandy, the Red Army's Operation Bagration on the Eastern Front, and the systematic destruction of German fuel depots by the American air force. The management of the response was constrained by a command structure in which Hitler concentrated authority over strategic armored reserves, preventing commanders on the front lines from acting autonomously. The armored divisions destined for the counterattack in Normandy arrived late and under continuous air attack. On July 20, 1944, a group of army officers attempted to assassinate Hitler at his headquarters with an explosive device. The attempt failed. In the following weeks, Hitler restructured the military command, transferred control of the Reserve Army to the SS, appointed Goebbels plenipotentiary for total mobilization, and initiated a systematic purge of the officer corps. More than one hundred death sentences were handed down and carried out before the end of the war. In December 1944, Hitler launched the Ardennes Offensive with the objective of reaching Antwerp and fracturing the Allied coalition. The operation consumed the last armored reserves of the Western Reich without achieving any of its objectives. On January 12, 1945, the Red Army launched the Vistula-Oder Offensive and advanced 500 kilometers to the Oder River in eighteen days. The two fronts converged on Reich territory while Hitler continued to issue orders from the bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery. On April 30, 1945, he died there. On May 8, the OKW (High Command of the Reich) signed the unconditional surrender. The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, held between November 1945 and October 1946, prosecuted the main survivors of the regime and established for the first time the category of crimes against humanity as an autonomous charge in international law.
