Saum ('fasting') is the morning prayer of the universalist Inayati Sufis. This prayer, composed by Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882-1927), was first recited in a private ceremony on May 7th, 1921, accompanied by movements which were a part of a complete prayer form. Later, Inayati Sufis began to omit the movements in public services and they were largely forgotten. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the "Universal Worship" service at which this prayer was first recited, the Inayati-Maimuni Order (http://www.inayati-maimunis.org) has created this video of Saum with its accompanying movements. The words of the prayer are given here in an updated gender inclusive English by Pir Netanel Miles-Yépez, and one small movement mirroring the Catholic Christian crossing of oneself is intentionally omitted. "Saum" is read by Pir Netanel Miles-Yépez, the head of the Inayati-Maimuni Order. The movements are performed by Pir Netanel and Inayati-Maumuni murids, Wayra Wanka, Heidi Lukinac, and Gregory Yamada. The video was shot on location in northern and southern Colorado, edited and directed by Alec Arshavsky. Yasha Wagner assisted on the Boulder shoot.
