There is more to the phrase...happiness is a choice, than the words explain. In fact, it is terribly misunderstood. It doesn't mean we overcome depression and anxiety simply by choosing to do so. This is not what choosing happiness means. Choosing happiness means we are investing in our own mental health. We are choosing to do the work to overcome past traumas. We are breaking bad, old habits and replacing them with the habits and routines that give us the best possible chance at feeling happy. It means we are not powerless! We can choose to do things that give our brain what it needs to produce the endorphins that make us feel happy. We can choose to be grateful. We can choose to re-write the fixed negative narratives in our brain. We can choose not to accept the perceived limitations our brain has made up. We can choose to meditate. We can pray. We can visualize...even when these things are the last things we want to do. We are not powerless. When we feel like nothing we do will help, we shouldn’t be trying to fix our self. We should instead, focus on what we can do, no matter how small. These seemingly insignificant mindfulness practices remind us that there is always something we can do...to choose happiness.
