How did anyone think a birds-eye view Aliens game was a good idea must be crazy. I associate that style with the old pc games like Commodore 64. Also that horrible pile of rubbish Mission Impossible for the NES. It's hard to think of one that's not a twin stick shooter that's any good. Anyways, Thanatos Encounter doesn't do itself any favors by having the first two stages be the most absolute slog of stages imaginable. Things do pick up after that, where you fight actual xenomorphs and get access to better weapons like the flamethrower. The final Alien Queen is pretty cool but right after that comes the ending which of course is trash. Figures... Aliens: Thanatos Encounter is a top-down, action-adventure game released for the Game Boy Color in 2001. Set within the popular Aliens universe, this game tasks players with surviving a Xenomorph outbreak aboard a military spaceship called the USS Thanatos. The story follows a squad of Colonial Marines sent to investigate the distress signal from the ship, only to discover it infested with dangerous aliens. Players can choose from five different marines, each with unique stats like speed, strength, and health. The gameplay focuses on exploration, puzzle-solving, and fast-paced combat, as players navigate the ship's maze-like environments filled with hostile Xenomorphs and limited resources. As a survival shooter, Thanatos Encounter offers various weapons, such as pulse rifles and flamethrowers, to fight off the Xenomorph threat. It also incorporates strategic elements, like conserving ammunition and medkits, while solving key-based puzzles to advance through levels. The game’s visuals, though limited by the Game Boy Color’s hardware, effectively convey the dark, claustrophobic atmosphere of the Aliens franchise. With a focus on tension, resource management, and alien combat, Aliens: Thanatos Encounter delivers a portable version of the Aliens experience for fans of the franchise.
