Kidney stones are an extremely prevalent disease, approximately 15% of the population will be affected at some point in their lives by kidney stones, of which 30% will need to undergo a procedure due to renal colic. Renal colic is a sudden onset pain located in the lower back , radiating to the lower parts of both men and women and may be associated with nausea and vomiting. When associated with a urinary infection, fever may be present. The diagnosis of renal colic is carried out through imaging tests such as ultrasound and computed tomography of the abdomen without contrast. After diagnosis through imaging exams of the localized stone or ureter, we must discuss with the patient the therapeutic options we have, including medical expulsive therapy and surgical treatment. Medical Expulsive therapy consists of the use of Alpha blockers to relax the muscles of the ureter and facilitate the elimination of the stone, the expulsion therapy time varies between four to six weeks and at the end of this period we perform a new imaging test to prove the elimination of the stone. Surgical treatment consists of ureteroscopy. This is a procedure in which we introduce a small scope through the ureter and fragment the calculus with the laser, we remove the remaining fragments with specific forceps and after the end of the procedure we place the double J stent in which it will remain for 5 - 7 days and removed in the office after this period. In some cases we cannot discuss expulsion therapy with the patient given the urgency of hearing the case, which are cases of urinary infection and patients with a solitary kidney.
