St. Agatha: The “World” vs God: Cloistered Life, Vatican II, and the Forgotten Meaning of the World

What does “the world” really mean in Sacred Scripture — and why did its meaning become so obscured after the Second Vatican Council? In this sermon, we recover the traditional Catholic distinction between the earth as the theater of God’s good creation and the world as a spiritual reality opposed to God, often identified by the saints as the seat of wickedness. Drawing from Sacred Scripture, St Benedict, Dom Delatte, Fulton J. Sheen, and St Agatha, this talk explains why cloistered life is not an escape from reality — but a prophetic witness against the spirit of the world. The monk and cloistered nun reject not only obvious evils, but even good earthly things, in order to pursue greater heavenly goods. This total belonging to God stands in sharp contrast to modern attempts to “update” cloistered life, including post-conciliar documents like Cor Orans, which blur the lines between enclosure and the world.
