Sanchi Stupa, Madhya Pradesh : Located at Sanchi Town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, the great Sanchi Stupa is the oldest stone structure in India. It was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in 3rd century and then afterwards the construction work was over by his wife Devi who was the daughter of a merchant of Vidisha. The nucleus of stupa is a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of Buddha and crowned by the chatra in order to honor and shelter the relics. Four elaborated carved ornamental gateways and a balustrade encircling the structure were added to the stupa in 1st century by Devi. Sanchi stupa is 43 km north east of Bhopal.
