Israeli tanks positioned themselves on the square and soldiers occupied buildings overlooking the church. Thus began the siege of Bethlehem that lasted five weeks. Those inside the church with the gunmen included human rights activists, journalists and members of the church's clergy. During the siege, while intense negotiations took place, some of those holed up inside, and the bodies of those killed in gun battles with the Israelis, were able to leave. Israeli soldiers threw smoke bombs between those leaving and journalists, blocking the view. A European-brokered deal ended the siege. As part of the deal, 13 of the group- those highest on Israel's wanted list- were deported, first to Cyprus and then to other European countries. Another 26 militiamen were transported to the Gaza Strip, where they were to remain, exiled from the West Bank. After pressure applied by both The United States and Israel, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat agreed to relinquish some of his power to create the new post. The appointment was seen as a pre-cursor to the U.S. unveiling its "road map" to peace, with the aim of establishing Palestinian statehood within three years. However, continued violence and Israeli strikes within the West Bank and Gaza on Hamas targets were a constant setback to progress. 7.3.03 - Ramallah, West Bank Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister Designate, sitting at desk 18.3.03 - Ramallah, West Bank Various of Palestinian Legislative Council meeting in chamber Various of council members voting on resolution 9.4.03 - Gaza Various shots of bodies being carried through crowd Various shots of masked paramilitary fighters with guns in burial parade 9.4.02 - Jenin Damaged empty classroom, pan to blood on floor Close up of broken light and blood splattered floor Pockmarks on ceiling and walls File, 20.4.96 - Gaza Mohammed Abu Abbas - allowed into Gaza for first time to attend Palestinian National Council meeting sits down Abbas greets man 16.4.03 - Baghdad Wide shot of exterior Mohammed Abbas' house 23.4.03 - Ramallah, West Bank Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
