More than 80 patients suffering from hernias, will this week benefit from free medical surgery, at the Coast General Hospital in Mombasa. County Health Executive, Hazel Koitaba, says the facility receives more than 1,200 cases every year, since the region has a high prevalence for hernia, but most of the patients cannot afford the surgery. Koitaba says there aren't enough surgeons, and they only manage to operate on about 150 patients. The medical camp will also provide an opportunity for surgeons from Mombasa and other parts of the country, to learn new techniques of treating hernias, from a South African team. A hernia is a condition in which part of an organ is displaced and protrudes in the abdomen, the upper thigh and groin areas. It causes discomfort and pain especially when standing or lifting heavy items.
