If you are looking for more of these videos you can check out the playlist right here:    • Sex Related Medical Problems   There are several contraception methods available, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. The type that will suit you best depends personal circumstances and your health. After watching this video you could go to your doctor or general practitioner to discuss your choices. Condoms: Condoms are made of very thin latex, plastic or rubber, with the purpose of preventing semen to come into contact with your sexual partner. There are 2 types: external ones which are worn on the penis and vaginal ones worn inside the vagina. Benefits: protects against STI's, you only need to use them when you have sex and if used correctly they are very effective (95-98%). Disadvantages: can interrupt sex, they can tear and you may be allergic to the material of the condom. Oral contraceptive pill (the pill): It contains artificial female hormones like estrogen and progesterone. The pill prevents pregnancy by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg each month (ovulation) and/or it makes it harder for sperm to penetrate the womb. Benefits: the pill is a very effective contraceptive (99%) and it may decrease painful periodes. Disadvantages: you will need to take the pill at fixed times everyday, it can cause side effects, it may increases your risk for cervical cancer and it does not protect you from STIs. Contraceptive injection: These contain the hormone progestogen. So just like the pill these injections prevent ovulation and make it harder for sperm to penetrate the womb. Benefits: they are 99% effective, last up to 13 weeks and may reduce heavy periodes. Disadvantages: they are injections, your periods may change, they do not protect agains an STI, they may cause side effects and after quitting they can delay the return of your periods up to a year. Contraceptive implants: They also contain progestogen and steadily release it into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. It does this in the same way as the contraceptive injections. However, once in place the implant protects you for 3 years. Benefits: It is effective for up to 3 years, it is more than 99% effective, your fertility will return to normal as soon as the implant is taken out and it may reduce heavy periodes. Disadvantages: the implant needs to be placed and removed with minor surgery, it may cause side effects, your periods may stop and it does not protect from STIs. Intrauterine device (IUD) and the intrauterine system (IUS): These are small T-shaped devices which are placed into your uterus (womb) by a doctor. The IUD contains copper and releases it into your womb. Killing the sperm and preventing a fertilized egg from being able to implant itself into the womb. The IUS release the hormone progestogen. Working in the same way as the contraceptive implants and injections. Advantages: both are up to 99% effective for many years, your fertility will return to normal after the device is removed, the IUS may reduce heavy periodes and the IUD does not have hormonal side effects. Disadvantages: your periods may stop completely, when use the IUD this may increase your periods for several months, when using the IUS this may cause side effects and both do not protect you from STIs. Sterilization: This is the only permanent form of contraception. It can both be done in men and women. Benefits: both are 99% effective and permanent. Drawbacks: they both require surgery, they are very hard to reverse, they don’t protect against STIs and there is a risk for complications.
