Present day Zambia was a British colony known as Northern Rhodesia. Northern Rhodesia was the centre of a lot of crisis in the late 1950s, most of which were championed by nationalists agitating for independence. The Zambian African National Congress and later the United National Independence Party were the foremost political parties leading the campaigns at the time. The Zambian African National Congress (ZANC) was established in 1948. Then it was called the Northern Rhodesia Congress (NRC). Godwin Lewanika became the first president of the party. The NRC was the first African political party in the country. In 1951 the party’s name was changed to Northern Rhodesian African National Congress (NRANC) when Harry Nkumbula was party president.
