Leopoldina-Symposium "New World Disorder – Germany’s and Europe’s Challenges and Opportunities for economic Competitiveness and new Technologies" | 6/7 October 2025 "Global geopolitical developments" | Harold James, Princeton University, Princeton/USA | 00:00:12 "EU competitiveness and economic security" | Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Bruegel, Brussels/Belgium | 00:26:20 "The economic situation in Germany" | Clemens Fuest, ifo Institute, Munich/Germany | 00:46:26 In recent decades, Germany and its export-orientated economy have benefited greatly from open and rule-based global trade. However, the geopolitical situation and thus the global economic conditions have changed dramatically in recent years. Politics is increasingly intervening in the globalised world economy, with far-reaching consequences for trade as well as the availability of energy and raw materials. In addition, there are structural crises in Germany that are leading to a decline in industrial production. How can Germany and Europe maintain their innovative strength and competitiveness in the face of these challenges? These and other current geopolitical and geo-economic issues have been discussed by representatives from science, politics and business. The symposium is an initiative of the Leopoldina focus group ‘Climate and Energy’ under the direction of Ferdi Schüth ML and Robert Schlögl ML and is financially supported by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation.
