For decades within Australia there has been millions of dollars spent on housing projects and report after report and research after research on remote housing and what is needed. We know what is needed and we know what works. What we need to do is listen, really hear from Aboriginal Leaders such as Claude Carter and then put words into action. So often we hear the words of government speaking about the need to listen to community, to focus on community led initiatives, work with community on co-design, but often these words can be empty as government gets caught up in policy and procedure and arguing between state and federal government as to who is responsible instead of action based on what really works. We need to stop building houses in the shortest period of time to tick a box as we have known for decades that this does not work. The FISH - Foundation for Indigenous Sustainable Health Bawoorrooga Self-help Sustainable Housing and Education Program, 100kms South East of Fitzroy Crossing in the remote region of the East Kimberley of Western Australia is a national prototype of co-design and co-construction in action led by the community for the community. May those in power really hear the words of community leaders such as Claude Carter in letting people know what really works in developing sustainable and culturally appropriate designed housing suitable for the environment and co-built by the community.
