On August 20, 2015 The AACM Great Black Music ensemble performed a composition by Saalik Ziyad. Here are notes from the program. Notes about the composition The composition Ancient Creation is about ancient civilizations before colonization. It begins with several creation stories. The Tree of Life and also the Big Bang Theory as well. Then it evolves into the heavens with angels singing. Then to Africa, to the New World with indigenous people, then back to Africa, With brilliant visuals by Jonathan Woods. The piece hopes to captivate that. In celebration of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians’ (AACM) 50th anniversary, the Chicago organization’s flagship big band presents an ambitious opus examining its own rich history, “ancient to the future.” The evening will feature commissions by AACM members Tomeka Reid and Saalik Ziyad representing different generations of AACM artists and continue the traditions of integrating choreography and visual arts into their sonic performance, featuring Adoyele Dance and Drum Company.
