This scripture covers the dialogue between the Brahmin Esukārī and the Buddha regarding the discriminatory service and definitions of wealth assigned to the four castes. Esukārī argued that the duties and assets of each caste are strictly determined by birth. In response, the Buddha refuted this by using the analogy of fire, pointing out that regardless of what kind of wood is burned, the brightness and essence of the fire remain the same. He argued that human value depends on moral conduct and spiritual growth rather than lineage. Specifically, he taught that only service that cultivates faith and wisdom is worth performing, and anyone can achieve the noble Dhamma by keeping the precepts and practicing loving-kindness. Ultimately, moved by the Buddha’s insight, Esukārī decided to become a lifelong lay disciple.
