What Killed Homestuck?

A sequel to:    • In Defense of Homestuck's Ending   One year ago, I created a video essay titled “In Defense of Homestuck’s Ending.” In said video, I made an argument that the comic Homestuck had an incredible ending that masterfully used the comic’s themes of control over the narrative and the feeling of being trapped to create a beautiful ending. But, in doing so, I ignored the rest of Part 4, which ranges in quality from actually decent to infuriatingly bad. For a lot of people, it didn’t matter what the ending said, thematically, because they’d already given up on Homestuck. The later years of the comic weren’t satisfying, and the ending didn’t fix the problems the comic had been struggling with. Part four is…rough. Brilliant at times, but also often infuriating. For a lot of people, it killed the comic. But, as someone who actually like Part 4 more than most people, I don’t think Part 4 is what killed the comic. I think, after rereading some of the later Homestuck chapters, I get why the comic died. And before I explain how, I first need to discuss a few characters.
